Friday November 25th at Portland – Pirates 4 Worcester Sharks 3

Tyler Eckford scored on a power play with 1:41 remaining in overtime and Curtis McElhinney stopped a season high 44 shots as the Portland Pirates defeated the Worcester Sharks by a count of 4-3 this evening in front of 5,218 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Eckford tallied two goals on the night, Andy Miele contributed a pair of goals and an assist, and Matt Watkins and Brett MacLean each notched a pair of assists as the Pirates improved to 9-7-1-1 overall and 6-4-0-0 at home.

Ben Ferriero, Curt Gogol and Tommy Wingels each registered goals as the Sharks dropped to 6-5-3-2 on the season.

The Pirates got on the board first, on a blast from the blue-line by Eckford just over five minutes into the game but the Sharks provided a quick answer on a power-play tally from Ferriero exactly one minute later at the 6:08 mark. In the second period, Portland claimed their second lead of the game when a shot from Miele deflected over and behind Worcester goaltender Harri Sateri with over five minutes remaining in the frame. Miele beat Sateri again three minutes later, this time on Portland’s first power-play opportunity of the game, on a snapshot from the right of the goaltender’s crease following a perfect carom off the boards from a Nick Ross shot from the point. Worcester would go on to cut the lead to one on Gogol’s third of the season, capitalizing on a rebound from a wrap-around attempt from Marek Viedensky at 8:34, and eventually tie it up on Wingel’s third tally of the season just under two minutes later. The game would go on to an extra overtime period, where Eckford blasted home his second of the night to give the Pirates the victory.

The Sharks out-shot the Pirates 47-25 as McElhinney improved to 5-7-0 on the season. Sateri stopped 21 shots while dropping to 3-4-0.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were: 1. Eckford; 2. Miele; 3. McElhinney.

Saturday November 26th at Worcester, Mass – Pirates 3 – Worcester Sharks 1

Andy Miele notched a pair of assists and Matt Watkins contributed a goal and an assist as the Portland Pirates defeated the Worcester Sharks by a count of 3-1 this evening in front of 3,597 at the DCU Center.

Dean Arsene and Brett MacLean also tallied for Portland and Curtis McElhinney stopped 29 shots as the Pirates improved to 10-7-1-1 overall and are 6-0-1-0 in their last seven games.

Nathan Moon recorded the lone Worcester goal as the Sharks dropped their third straight contest in falling to 6-6-3-2 on the season.

Just over eight minutes into the game, Arsene got the visitors on the board first with his first goal of the season, a slapshot from the blue line with Igor Gongalsky screening Worcester goaltender Tyson Sexsmith. The Sharks would provide an answer before the end of the first period, with Moon knocking home his third of the season in a scrum to the left of the goaltender’s crease with less than three minutes remaining in the opening frame. MacLean provided the only tally of the middle stanza, netting a power-play goal for his second of the season with less than five minutes remaining. Four minutes into the third period, Watkins upped the Portland lead to two with a wrist-shot from the left circle beating Sexsmith to his glove side to set the final margin.

The Pirates out-shot the Sharks 31-30 as McElhinney improved to 6-7-0 on the season. Sexsmith stopped 28 shots while dropping to 3-5-2.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were: 1. Miele; 2. Watkins; 3. McElhinney.

The Pirates will continue their seven-game road trip on Friday, December 2 in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton when they take on the Penguins in a 7:05 p.m. faceoff. The following night on Saturday, Portland will travel down to Hershey for a 7 p.m. faceoff with the Bears at the GIANT Center, and will wrap up the three-game weekend set at Springfield on Sunday at 3 p.m. Fans can catch all of the action with broadcaster Jeff Mannix on the Portland Pirates Radio Network 95.9 WPEI and 95.5 WPPI.

Week in review

Thursday, November 24: Gwinnett Gladiators, 1, Wheeling Nailers, 5 – L

The Gwinnett Gladiators fell 5-1 to the Wheeling Nailers Thanksgiving evening at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Wheeling moved into a tie with the Gladiators for second in the American Conference with 20 points apiece.

The Nailers forward Ben Farrer scored the first goal of the game for the Nailers late in the first at 15:31 with assists from Denver Manderson and Tim Priamo.

Early in the second period, the Nailers scored two goals minutes apart by first and second stars of the game, Cody Chupp and Andrew Hotham. Both goals came on the power play.

The Gladiators were down 3-0 going into the third period.

Gwinnett looked to get back in the game 61 seconds into the third period on Tyler Murovich’s third goal of the season. Gwinnett’s assist leader Joey Haddad notched another helper on the season as he threaded the puck through the Nailers defense to set up Murovich’s goal.

Wheeling answered at 8:31 of the third period to put the game away. Wheeling’s Chris Barton picked up the goal as Hotham added his third point of the game with an assist.

Hotham added an empty netter for the Nailers with 44 second left in the third period to seal the win.

Wheeling outshot the Glads 29-16 in the game and Wheeling finished 3-5 in the power play, while Gwinnett went 0-for-3 on the man advantage.

Friday, November 25: Gwinnett Gladiators, 3, Wheeling Nailers, 1 – W

It was a Black Friday for the Wheeling Nailers as the Gwinnett Gladiators won 3-1 Friday evening at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Gwinnett was the first team to outshoot the Nailers this season posting a 32-to-17 shots on goal margin.

The Nailers (10-5-0-0) did not skip a beat from the Thursday night as they scored the first goal of the game 54 seconds into the first period. Wheeling’s Cody Chupp got the goal with an assist from Zach Hansen.

The Gladiators (9-6-2-2) were able to fight back with a man-advantage goal from Pat Galivan with a snapper at the top of the right wing circle and an assist from rookie defensemen Shane Sims and Colin Vock to tie the game at one.

Gwinnett and Wheeling remained tied ending the second period 1-1. Gwinnett held Wheeling to three shots, which tied the season low for fewest shots allowed in a period this season for Gwinnett.

Early in the third period, the Glads Colin Vock weaved through the Wheeling defense to punch the puck past the Nailers netminder Peter Delmas for an unassisted game-winner at the 4:20 mark. Vock notched his first goal of the season for the Glads, putting Gwinnett up 2-1.

Gwinnett’s Tyler Murovich gave the Glads the insurance goal to seal the 3-1 win with the help of defenseman Will Colbert at 15:29 in the third.

Billy Sauer collected 16 saves for his second victory with Gwinnett.

Gwinnett was able to hold Wheeling 0-for-4 on the power play.

Saturday, November 26: Gwinnett Gladiators, 4, South Carolina Stingrays, 5 – OTL

Trent Campbell’s overtime goal lifted the South Carolina Stingrays to a 5-4 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators Saturday night at North Charleston Coliseum. The Glads (9-6-3-2) did pick up a point despite the loss, and are now tied with the Rays (11-6-0-1) atop the South Division.

Gwinnett forward Spencer Bennett and defenseman Corey Fienhage were recalled to the AHL earlier in the day, and with defenseman Brad Miller being put on the 21-day IR the Gladiators were three players short for their third game in as many days. Despite battling back from 2-0 and 4-2 deficits, Campbell worked his way to the slot and beat goaltender Marc Cheverie 1:42 into OT to seal the Rays win with Zach Tarkir and goaltender Philipp Grubauer assisting.

It was Campbell’s second game-winning goal in the past couple weeks against Gwinnett. He had the winning marker late in the third of SC’s 3-2 win over the Gladiators back on November 19th.

Cheverie made 26 saves in his first start back with Gwinnett after being previously called up to AHL Portland.

South Carolina notched the first two tallies of the game, as David de Kastrozza scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season at 6:20 and 7:40 to make it a 2-0 game. His first marker came on the Rays first shot of the contest.

Gwinnett answered on their first shot of the game and only shot of the opening period. Forward Joey Haddad took an outlet pass from Tyler Murovich and broke in alone on Grubauer, deking to the near side and rifling a shot top shelve far side to bring the Glads within one at 15:18. Colin Vock had the second assist, and the Rays led 2-1 through 20 minutes out-shooting Gwinnett 10-1.

The Glads fought back in the second period to tie the game, as Bryan Brutlag was hauled down on a breakaway drawing a penalty shot, and he beat Grubauer five-hole to tie the game at 2:10 of the second.

South Carolina answered back to regain their two-goal lead. Matt Pope’s seventh at 4:55 and Trent Campbell’s fifth at 8:29 again out the Gladiators’ backs against the wall, and again Gwinnett came back.

Pat Galivan fired a shot from the point that beat a screened Grubauer on the powerplay at 11:41 to make it 4-3 SC with Will Colbert picking up the lone assist. Ryley Grantham then tied it at 18:51, burying a centering pass from Brandt from in close to tie the game at four heading into the third.

South Carolina out shot the Glads 31-20, while Gwinnett managed to go 1-for-5 on the man advantage while limiting SC to an 0-for-5 collar.

Other News

November 26th

The AHL Portland Pirates, announced that Spencer Bennett has been recalled from the Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL) and Marc Cheverie has been reassigned to Gwinnett.

Overtime!

The Gladiators went past regulation for a league leading seventh time on Saturday night in a 5-4 overtime loss to the South Carolina Stingrays. Gwinnett has posted a 2-0-3-2 record in overtime this season. With Sunday’s overtime loss to South Carolina, the Gladiators are on pace to tie the ECHL record of 18 for most overtime/shootout losses in a season. The organization holds the current record with 18 overtime/shootout losses recorded in the 2001-02 season as the Mobile Mysticks.

Getting Going

The Gladiators forward Tyler Murovich collected at least one point in each of the Gladiators last three games. For Murovich, it was his fifth, sixth and seventh point (4g, 3a) in the last nine games for the Gladiators. He began the season with just three assists in the first 11 games of the season.

Take a Shot

The Gladiators forward Bryan Brutlag was awarded the first penalty shot of the season for the Gladiators in Saturday’s 5-4 overtime loss against the South Carolina Stingrays. The rookie forward out of Lakeville, MN, was successful on the penatly shot for Gwinnett. It was the first penalty shot for Gwinnett since Pat Galivan was unsuccessful against the Reading Royals on February 27, 2011.

Aim High!

Gladiators forward Pat Galivan notched his ninth goal of the season in the Gladiators 5-4 overtime loss against the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday night. With nine goals through first 20 games of the season, Galivan in on pace to finish the season with 32 goals, just four goals shy of the Gladiators all time team record for goals in a season of 36 held by Colton Fretter during the 2006-07 season. Mark Turner’s 45 goals with the Mobile Mysticks in 1999-2000 is the organizational all time team record.

Looking for 50

In addition to being on pace to finish the season with 30 or more goals this year, Galivan needs just nine goals to become the 8th player in Gladiators team history to record 50 or more goals in a Gwinnett Career. Andy Brandt, who notched his 50th career Gladiators goal on November 19th, was the 7th player to reach the milestone for Gwinnett.
