Los Angeles – The NHL Board of Governors met in Los Angeles yesterday prior to the 2010 NHL draft evening and gave final approval to the ‘illegal checks to the head’ rule that was implemented into games on March 25th of this year.

The new Rule, is as follows:

Rule 48, “Illegal Check to the Head,” also empowers a referee, at his discretion, to assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the penalized player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.

Any player who incurs a total of two game misconducts under this rule, in either the regular season or playoffs, will be suspended automatically for his team’s next game. For each subsequent game misconduct penalty, the automatic suspension will be increased by one game.

If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline also can be applied.

When it comes to analysis of this rule it’s something that is needed and in theory will help the game in the long run. However, it remains to be seen how it will be applied in games especially when it comes to automatic suspensions.

2010 NHL Awards – Shane Doan wins King Clancy Trophy

Posted by admin On June - 24 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Las Vegas – Tonight at the 2010 NHL Awards at the Palms Hotel, Phoenix Coyotes Captain Shane Doan won the King Clancy Trophy. According to the NHL, the King Clancy Trophy is given to the player “who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice and who has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community.”

Shane Doan is not only the most recognized face on the Phoenix Coyotes but he also donates his time to many and various charities such as the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the Children First Academy. However, he is also being recognized for his accomplishments over the course of the past year or so.

Coyotes fans may remember last off-season that Shane Doan went above and beyond the call of any NHL Captain by answering questions in the media about the Coyotes ownership drama when he really didn’t have to. In addition, the wording of the press release also implied that he is being recognized for leading the Coyotes this past season to franchise records of 50 wins and 107 points with all the outside distractions of the Phoenix Coyotes ownership instability going on.

You wouldn’t know it but the Coyotes off-season last Summer for Doan was “a tough summer in the fact that kind of wondering what was going on.” He continued, “It was exciting to turn it around.”

Doan also sees Winning the King Clancy Trophy as a “great honor. I accepted it on the fact that we had great leadership in the room, and I totally recognize it’s a team thing more than an individual thing.”

I partially disagree with that statement. I’ll explain why.

When I first read the press release that the NHL handed out to us in the media room about Shane Doan winning the King Clancy Trophy, the following statement resonated with me:

Aside from simply making appearances, Doan is well-known in Phoenix for his ability to put a smile on fans’ faces and engage them in conversations about nearly anything. During the Coyotes Carnival in March, during which Doan playfully interacted with each and every fan who stood in line awaiting the chance to participate in carnival games with him…

This afternoon, I checked out the red carpet procession leading up to the start of the 2010 NHL Awards, and I noted this kid and his father next to me. The Kid had a pad of paper and a sharpie trying to get autographs from whomever came by. Some NHL Stars just walked past not signing any autographs, some just signed his pad and moved on, and some didn’t see the kid. However, when Shane Doan came by, something else happened. (Picture Below)

Doan stopped, kneeled down to the kids level and genuinely interacted with the kid asking him questions, asking him his name. He sincerely connected with the kid. It’s the type of connection that kids will remember as they grow older and is the kind of moment that truly defines Shane Doan as a person off the ice.

This is why he won the King Clancy Trophy tonight:

It’s a fitting (and overdue) tribute to a man who is being honored not only for his on-ice contributions but it’s also a reflection of his tremendous character off the ice.

2010 NHL Awards – Dave Tippett wins the Jack Adams Trophy

LAS VEGAS - JUNE 23: Dave Tippett of the Phoenix Coyotes poses for a portrait with the Jack Adams Award during the 2010 NHL Awards at the Palms Casino Resort on June 23, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

Las Vegas – In a nearly unanimous vote, Phoenix Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett won the Jack Adams Trophy tonight at the 2010 NHL Awards at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas. Coyotes already fans know what a tremendous story team had this season. However, when looking at the final results of the voting, (below) it is more of an amazing feat, accomplishment and special moment in the history of the Phoenix Coyotes when Tippett received all but two of the first place votes for the award. (The Jack Adams Trophy is voted on by the members of the North American NHL media.)

When it comes to individual awards such as the Jack Adams, some people would think that the Coyotes successes this season were all because of Dave Tippett. However, don’t expect Coach Tippett won’t take full credit for winning the Jack Adams because he looks at the award “as a coaching staff award for our staff to get recognized.”

It takes more than just one head coach to run an NHL team. Shane Doan recalled after winning the King Clancy Trophy “Ulf Samuelsson did a tremendous job preparing us to go into training camp. Without that, it might have been a hard transition.”

So when did everything start clicking with the team?

According to Tippett, in the second game of the season when they shut out the Penguins on their home ice “in that game, I know the players were looking at each other going we can do this.” From that moment on, the Coyotes showed that they not only believed in the system that Tippett has put into place but in themselves.

If there’s one thing that the Phoenix Coyotes seemed to have stressed during the NHL Awards media availability is that they have finally completed the first stage build of a solid foundation as well as a winning tradition. After many years, this is a very positive sign for not only the team but for the die hard fans who have stuck with the team through thick and thin.

Speaking of Coyotes fans, when I asked Coach Tippett if he had a message for Coyotes fans back in Phoenix he said this:

“Just that we’re going to continue to improve, continue to try to push forward with what we started last year, and we hope to have a lot more fun next year. ”

I pretty sure that I can speak for Coyotes fans in that they are indeed looking forward to next season.

2010 NHL Awards – Day 1

Posted by admin On June - 23 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS
Philadelphia Flyers v Chicago Blackhawks - Stanley Cup

It’s 2:30 in the morning on the day of the NHL Awards and I’m sitting in the Mad Onion restaurant of the Hooters Hotel and Casino chowing down on a really good $10 Prime Rib dinner. While eating this tasty meal I find myself reflecting on the events of the past 24 hours.

From the moment I arrived at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas at fifteen minutes to noon (Pacific Time), I was immediately setting up shop in a remote corner of the terminal getting ready for a Hockey Hall of Fame press conference to announce the Class of 2010. The media got a heads up before the conference call took place on who was going to be enshrined this year in the Hockey Hall of Fame. From the list I saw, it seemed that the Hockey Hall of Fame finally raised the bar in the criteria needed to be accepted as a member.

However, one thing I totally spaced on (little sleep tends to do that) was the omission of former NHL Coach and three time Jack Adams trophy winner Pat Burns into the Hockey Hall of Fame. (Pat Burns has cancer for the third time and has given up his battle against it. There has been a movement by media and fans alike to put him into the Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2010). As the news spread among the media and fans, there was a tremendous condemnation of the omission of Pat Burns into this year’s Hockey Hall of Fame Class…myself included.

I left the airport, arrived at the hotel and dropped off my luggage very quickly as I needed to head out to the Palms Hotel. I thought it was a good idea to walk to the Palms Hotel from where I was at (approx 2.2 miles) as I wanted to swing by the New York, New York Casino and check out the now closed ESPNZone.

ESPN recently closed the majority of their ESPNZone Chain. More details about my findings can be found here:

As I continued my journey past the point of no return and eventually onto the Palms Hotel and Casino, I started to recall all the times I made fun of hikers who go out in the hot Phoenix sun with little or no water.  They’re the ones who think they can handle the beat down the 100+ degree sun can dish out. I swore to myself, as I passed the Rio Casino and Hotel, that I would never make fun of them again as I was struggling during the last 1/2 mile of my walk.

I arrived at the Palms hotel just as the media availability began and missed the opportunity to interview Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

I should note that there was a large Coyotes contingent at the NHL Media Awards including Coyotes CEO Doug Moss.

I compiled a separate post of interviews from the 2010 NHL Awards media availability here:

Following the media availability, players, media and NHL front office reps all gathered for a social hour at another place on the Palms resort property. Everything that went on here was off the books and I met some great people in the NHL and media in the process. However, I will say only the following about this event…don’t ever get in a discussion with Canadian media types about the Coyotes ownership prior to 2006. It’s worse than getting into a religion or politics discussion at a bar. Trust me on that.

As I was walking back to my hotel with sore feet in a Las Vegas evening that was below 200 degrees, I reflected on the day’s events. One common theme kept coming up all the time. How the nominees all are more than worthy of their accolades even if they win or not. Just to be in the NHL is a tremendous accomplishment in itself. However, to be recognized as the top three for various on and off the ice awards is even more of a tremendous feat.

Many fans (and media types) may and have blown off the awards as a insignificant event that isn’t worthy of being an all out event in Las Vegas. I disagree and offer this, how else do you propose to award these players and coaches for their tremendous feats this season? I say Las Vegas is the perfect place to hold these awards AND I think the NHL should seriously consider moving the NHL Draft permanently to Las Vegas as well. (I’ll write more on this later).

Once I got back to my hotel, I crashed out quickly and slept until around 1:30-2:00 AM and was extremely hungry.

Hmmm Prime Rib sounds good about now.

2010 NHL Awards – Media Day

Las Vegas – In the middle of a hot day under the Las Vegas sun, the nominees for the 2010 NHL Awards
descended on the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas to address the media prior to the awards tomorrow at the Palms hotel. Talking to the nominees over the course of the hour was a unique experience in that there was not the added pressure of an NHL regular season that may or may not affect the way they address questions.

Watching reporters ask questions during this media availability was like watching the NFL Superbowl media day. Some questions were really thought provoking, others….well let us say they do not cover hockey and posed questions accordingly.

Below is a collection of audio interviews with multiple nominees from media day at the 2010 NHL Awards.

We started this site to meet the growing demand by Coyotes fans in their need for Coyotes News. We do things a bit differently here. We don\'t provide the canned articles you would find on most other sites. We provide analysis, news, and information with a bit of attitude. EDITORIAL MISSION: We let the other guy handle the box scores and stuff like that. We fill in the gaps in coverage....and trust me there are lots of gaps in local coverage that need to be filled.
