Edmonton Oilers v Phoenix Coyotes

Instead of doing a typical writeup I’m just going to do the analysis in pseudo bullet point fashion:

- 0 for 9 on the Power Play – Pathetic. The Power Play looked like they were trying new things but you gotta send someone to the net more often.

- Still trying to figure out how the notoriously stingy Coyotes defense allowed four Oilers players to crash the crease in front of Bryzgalov for their first goal.

- Do you remember when Oilers Goaltender’s Jeff Deslauriers helmet flew off a couple of times in the game? That’s an old trick that former Oilers goaltender Dwayne Roloson used to do to relieve pressure and get his team a whistle. You can see where some of Deslauriers bad habits came from. Something for the Coyotes coaching staff to file away for possible use in the future.

- The same thing above applies to Deslauriers stick throwing twice in the shootout. Something he picked up from Roloson. I looked through the rulebook and there isn’t anything explicitly that said what he did was illegal. However, Rule 53 (Throwing Equipment) could be applied to the situation here. Here’s the link to the rule if you all would like to see the rule for yourselves: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26345

- How do you leave a 60 point scorer like Dustin Penner wide open and allow him to score a goal?

- As much as one can argue that the Coyotes may have let a bad team like the Oilers to stay in this game, you have to know this. This game was one of those few games that the Oilers actually tried to win in quite some time. As much as the injuries to key players this season has effected their standings, their overall lack of trying on the ice was another effect on their standings this season. When the Oilers actually care about putting forth an effort to win that lasts longer than 5 minutes, they are a competitive team.
