Well, the Coyotes home winning and unbeaten streak ended against the less than mighty Detroit Red Wings 4-1. The game was a sellout 17,125 at the Jobing.com arena.

The Two things that pretty much contributed to the loss were the following:

1) The inability for the Coyotes to pick up Tomas Holmstrom in front of Bryzgalov allowing him to score two goals.
2) The inability for the Coyotes to beat the Red Wings ‘Crash the Crease’ defensive scheme in front of Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard.

Just watch how Holmstrom (he’s #96) just sneaks in in front of Bryz without his stick tied up:

Holmstrom goal #1

Holmstrom Goal #2

This was pretty much the game right here….

The other aspect of the game is Jimmy Howard and his overinflated stats thanks to the Wings crashing the crease when a puck gets near him.

Crashing the crease is when an opposing team, in this case the Coyotes, get a puck near to Jimmy Howard the entire team moves or ‘crashes’ in front of their goaltender to prevent opponents from getting near the puck or grabbing rebounds.

Teams like the Red Wings deploy a defensive scheme like this when 1) There are tons of injuries on the roster 2) Inexperience or a lack of talent on a given roster 3) Lack of faith in the starting Goaltender(s) 4) All of the above

Here’s some samples of what I’m talking about. Watch when the puck gets near Howard the rest of the Red Wings on the ice Stop and skate right in front of Howard:

Next up….the Coyotes travel to Western Canada for a quick two game road trip starting tomorrow against the Edmonton Oilers.
