Coyotes – DOA – Oilers – 4
I know this write up is out of order and late.
It’s partially because I’ve been moving into a new place (with all the stress and energy sapping moments that go along with it) and partially because I really wanted to think about the write up in a ‘bigger picture’ manner.
The other reason is below as I wanted to show all you Phoenix Coyotes fans what standards for NHL media coverage should be. The Oilers (along with the Vancouver Canucks) have always been on the cutting edge of what an NHL media should provide and why the other media outlets in the area don’t deserve praise or credit for any of the coverage they offer.
If you look at the bottom of the post, you’ll see all the related Oilers related media about the game. Also, there’s some great video of director Kevin Smith’s visit to Rexall place.
Now imagine if the Coyotes had that kind of coverage…..
Anyways, on to the game wrap up…
What happened to the Oilers was pretty much a carbon copy of the games with the Canadiens, Lightning, and Blues. Bottom tiered/injured teams in the league bring their “A” game against the Coyotes because they know they are currently one of the teams to beat in the league.
So how do the Coyotes respond to this challenge?
By laying a big fat turd…..again.
Sure, the problem with the team are with a few of floaters and that the team lacks mental discipline to play a full 60 minutes of hockey. However, this is a TEAM and the team needs to pick up the slack and set a fire under the asses of the ones who are lacking.
When it came to the Oilers game it could be argued that blowout games like this happen from time to time.
Coyotes fans may remember the Vancouver Canucks coming into the Job last season and scored an own goal on the way to a 5-1 loss.
Game refresher:
The difference between that Canucks team and this season’s Coyotes team is that this scenario only happened once with the Canucks. They’re professionals and moved on after the game. The Coyotes have been letting this happen for many games now and something has to change.
Then again, it also can be argued that the Coyotes just up and quit which is a sign of a bigger issue.
One of the things I’m including in my report card from the quarter pole this season is that the Coyotes lack a killer instinct. They simply can’t get in touch with that emotion inside of them that they actually give a shit about how they play and proverbially kick the opposing teams in the junk. They have the skill and talent to do so….yet they don’t.
The secret to winning games this season is not if you have great players that can score a ton. No, the secret to winning games this season is which team can maintain the most discipline for the longest period of time in a given game. Furthermore, the team that can exploit the moments when opposing teams lose that discipline are going to come out on top every time.
The Oilers exploited the Coyotes mental lapses at the perfect times which is why the game turned out the way it did.
It’s a very simple concept that the Coyotes have yet to master this season.
In short, the Coyotes laid another fat turd.
Things to take away from the game:
Cohones – Time for the team as a whole to staple on a big pair of brass ones as they seemed to have lost them over the past couple of weeks. This Coyotes team has the potential to do some major damage in the Western Conference this season and the Opposing teams as of late know this. Time to man up or retire.
