The Montreal Canadiens, with one of the most porous defenses in the NHL, came into the Jobing.com arena last night and played one of their best defensive games of the year beating the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2.

The way the team played first period of the game looked to be how the tone was going to be set for the rest of the game until the third period. Then everything fell apart.

Now leading up to this moment, the officiating for some potentially game changing moments were handled incorrectly. One moment where a habs player took out a Coyotes player while he was going to the net was let go when a penalty shot should have been called.

Forward to the 3rd period…

What everyone thought was a puck battle turned into a hooking call that lead to the Power Play goal that not only was the turning point of the game but was the end of any sort of comeback the Coyotes could mount.

Not much to fault here for the Coyotes except for what Coach Tippett said in the post game presser in that the Coyotes need to work on puck battles a bit more.

Don’t get me wrong, both teams played a great game and the Habs, when they actually apply themselves to team defense are a pretty good team. Unfortunately, they have yet to show if they can maintain consistency over the course of the year.
