Day 1 -- ASU Hockey Open Tryouts

Today marked the first day of open tryouts for the 2009-2010 ASU Hockey team.  The tryouts were split into three sessions.  The first session was for goaltenders who didn’t play for the ASU Hockey team last season.  Session two was exclusively for players who were on the ASU Hockey team last season.  The Third session was for forwards and defenseman who did not play with the ASU Hockey Team last season.

The first session of the morning were a set of skills designed not only to test the goaltenders (there were seven of them) skill sets but their passion for the game as well.  Even after one session you could tell a few goaltenders that were going to get cut.  They just didn’t have it.   There were some others that had a good skill set and may give some of the goaltenders from last season a run for their money.

The second session of the morning consisted of the remaining eligible ASU Hockey players from last season’s squad squaring off in a no icing/whistle scrimmage.  This was some great hockey to watch and a great weeing out exercise.  There were some players that I spotted that clearly did not see the ice really well and were a bit of puck hogs when in transition.

Here’s a sample of the action.

Athletes Resource Conditioning Camp

I went and checked out the conditioning camp today and was impressed not only by the organization of the camp but also with the intensity of the drills.  Didn’t stay long due to a press conference at ASU yesterday afternoon.

A good majority of the Coyotes roster were in attendance as well as recently signed Edmonton Oilers Goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, Coyotes Director of Prospect Development, Sean Burke who participated in the camp. Jeremy Roenick was also spotted at the camp but was sitting outside the rink relaxing and watching the camp from a warmer (than the rink) aspect.

For those of you who have never been to these conditioning camps, here’s a sample of what goes on.

Phoenix Coyotes Firefox Theme

Many of the other NHL teams are doing this and it’s a pretty slick addition to those of you who use Firefox. Once installed, this theme has quick links to many informational areas of the Phoenix Coyotes website.

We started this site to meet the growing demand by Coyotes fans in their need for Coyotes News. We do things a bit differently here. We don\'t provide the canned articles you would find on most other sites. We provide analysis, news, and information with a bit of attitude.
