Phoenix Coyotes Lauri Korpikoski scores on Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard in Game 6 of their NHL Western Conference game in Detroit

Today the Phoenix Coyotes acquired yet another Rangers prospect when they traded Right Wing Enver Lisin to the Rangers for Left Wing Lauri Korpikoski.   The 6’1″ Korpikoski played in 68 games for the Rangers last season scoring 14 points (6 Goals and 8 Assists).

Korpikoski was drafted in the first round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft (19th overall) by the Rangers.  Korpikoski spent the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 in Hartford of the AHL where he amassed 88 points (34 Goals and 54 assists).

Interesting pickup for the Coyotes.  This deal makes me wonder if he’s going to get a legitimate shot at making the roster given his NHL experience.  I’m also wondering if Coyotes GM Don Maloney sees something in Korpikoski that says he’s about to have a breakout season of some sort.

The New York Daily News had this to say about Lauri Korpikoski:

Korpikoski, who can play wing or center (needs some more experience at center) scored six goals in 68 games as his playing time wavered all season long. He is currently an RFA and had been trying for a new deal with the Rangers, while there were whispers (planted? foolishly?) that he was considering a move to the KHL.
